After graduating from UNC Chapel Hill, Bill started his real estate career in 1972 when he joined his brothers Bob and Cy in helping to form the Rich Company in Washington, NC. In 1975, he moved to Elizabeth City to open up their newest branch.  At the same time he began the farm management arm of the company in Hyde County, the place Bill grew up.

Bill took a break from farm and commercial real estate sales, development and management in March 2013 to sign on as the Hyde County Manager. He stayed on as Manager of Hyde County until July 2018, at which time he stepped down and now works as their special projects coordinator.

Bill plans to concentrate his real estate efforts on Ocracoke Island, where he and his wife Jennifer have lived full time since 2007. Bill will also be involved with the sale of farm, timberland and hunting properties on mainland Hyde where he and all the Rich family still enjoy their family farm and get-away home on Mill Creek and the Pungo River.
